What Causes Hemorrhoids during Pregnancy?
Unfortunately, pregnancy can come with many uncomfortable side-effects, including hemorrhoids. These so-called ‘piles’ often vanish soon after childbirth, but they may persist.
Hemorrhoids seem to be common during a woman’s 3rd trimester and can appear for the first time or may re-appear if she has had them previously.
The actual process of giving birth can also cause hemorrhoids, especially in the second stage of labour, but they can also form as a postpartum complaint. However, the good news is that piles gradually disappear in most cases unless constipation becomes an issue.
The reasons for haemorrhoids forming during pregnancy are numerous, but a swelling uterus tends to put pressure on the pelvic veins and the inferior vena cava (another large vein). As a result, the blood return from your lower body can slow down and this adds pressure on your veins below the uterus – they beocme swollen as a result.
Constipation should be avoided at all costs during pregnancy. Having to strain to pass stools only serves to irritate the hemorrhoids.
And there’s more… pregnancy leads to an increase in the production of the hormone progesterone and this can make the walls of your veins relax and, as a result, they start to swell more easily.
The good news, is that hemorrhoids are NOT inevitable and there are a few things that you can do to prevent them:
- Eat a high fibre diet (beans, vegetables, fruit, etc), drink plenty of water and get regular exercise
- Don’t strain when going to the toilet
- Try not to stand or sit for too long (move around)
If hemorrhoids do appear, you can get a little relief by:
- Add an ice pack to the affected area to help reduce swelling (use a cover or it will be very cold!)
- Try a sitz bath (soak your bottom in a tub of warm water for about 10 minutes)
- Try warm AD cold treatments (alternate between the two)
- Gently clean after each bowel movement
- You can buy pre-moistened wipes which are often more comfortable than tissues (Witch Hazel is often added to these wipes which gives them a medicated effect)
- Ask your doctor if medicated suppositories might be appropriate for your needs
